Krabi January 2010

FUN FACT

INSIDER TIP

The motorcycle tuk-tuks found around Ao Nang charge per person not per journey, so don’t overload them as it can be dangerous. Instead, take two for the same price.

SHOP TALK

Every weekend, Maharat Soi 8 in Krabi Town becomes a “walking street”, a lovely open-air market selling fantastic street food, as well as handicrafts, clothes and jewellery for a fraction of the prices charged in the tourist areas. Open Friday to Sunday from 5pm–9pm.

JAVA JOLT

With its well-stocked library and cool jazz soundtrack, Gift’s Bakery is ideal for breakfast. Coffee is of the home-grown variety: produced down the road, it makes for a strong and earthy brew. 233 Moo 2, Ao Nang, tel: +66 (0)7 563 7190

CHEAP EATS

On a trip to Tiger Cave Temple, ask your driver to stop at a restaurant known only as “Duck Soup”. At lunchtime, this out-of-the-way shack is packed with diners clamouring for this perfectly executed dish, on offer with a variety of noodles. Talaat Kao, tel: +66 (0)7 562 0851

TOP TABLES

Wang Sai Seafood is the restaurant of choice for visiting dignitaries. The décor is nothing fancy, but the setting – right on the beach – and the freshness of the food is unbeatable. Nopparat Thara Beach, tel: +66 (0)7 563 8128

AT YOUR LEIWURE

For a great kayaking experience, head to the mangrove-lined backwaters of Bor Thor, where you’ll find stunning caverns with ancient paintings, as well as a couple of hidden lagoons. Half- and full-day organised tours widely available.

LATE & LIVELY

While the rest of Krabi has its high and low seasons, Phi Phi Island just keeps on partying year-round. Check out the full-, half- and new-moon parties at perennial favourite Hippies Bar, and continue dancing after hours at Carlitos. Both are right on the beach (Ton Sai side).

OVERNIGHT

Now is the time to find some great bargains on accommodation. The beachfront Railay Bay Resort & Spa, for example, is offering a “stay three, pay two” deal on all room categories. 145 Moo 2, Ao Nang, tel: +66 (0)7 581 9401, www..krabi-railaybay.com
